Studio; Exercise 2; Distractions

Responding to the idea of hunger cravings as a distraction, I created the above device which is essentially a mask that has a tube leading to a concealed box, in which I put a packet of Schnitz chips.

To conduct the test, the participant was given 2 minutes to find as many words as possible in a cross word without the mask on, and with it on.

As the results show, the user found 17 words without the mask in 2 minutes, and only 5 words with the mask, which showed how the user was more preoccupied with the scent of the chips than with completing the task at hand.

In relation to the studio, what I can draw from this as a technology to look out for at the schools later will be the location of the cafeteria in relation to the classrooms. In fact not only this, where the vents [if any] from the kitchen areas run through, as this experiment shows the scent of food is a distraction.

My second specialisation for this semester is Paradise, where the specialisation outcome is to create a boutique hotel villa in Sri Lanka’s Mirissa.
However, as part of the class my work for this specialisation will be on a separate blog page.

Exercise 1; cont. & re-edited

From the Exercise 1 presentation, I discovered that initial drawings were only concerned with how the space felt, and didn’t illustrated the surroundings of the space at all. Hence, I re-worked two of my drawings to try and maintain the feeling I wanted to convey and show the space as well. Through re-editing, I experimented with different styles of drawing, making the drawing more playful as I felt appropriate to the narrative. The final image is an extra task for this exercise, where I drew a quick perspective of the classroom, that I drew the plan for previously, what I took away from the presentations today as a whole was this idea of ‘human centric’ design, which is why more than illustrating a bare room I drew in children in the space explaining the purpose of the space rather than objects explaining.
